Most lower power decks can't afford to advance their gameplan and hold mana for removals. Especially since they aren't running the most efficient interactions pieces if they are of lower power. Power levels is still very important even if everyone is running 10-15 removals/interaction cards. You're mostly just talking about the issue in FFA matchup that the first to go off will become archenemy and usually lose the game. Try a deck that present a win on T4 while other players are either casting their Commander or ramping on that turn. I understand the general tip you're trying to get across that resiliency is better than explosiveness, but stating that power doesn't matter if you just run more removals is just not a valid argument.

I don't really like this Gonti, honestly. Which is really a bummer because the original Gonti was one of my favorite magic cards when it first released. This new one feels too commander-y to me, too representative of the commander-first design philosophy. Where did Gonti get green and blue mana from? Why isn't it reflected in his art, like colors normally are? Looking at his card art, which prominently features red, he seems like he should be BR if anything, Grixis at the very most. Green-ness isn't represented by any of his abilities either. These are squarely UB abilities. So where does green come from? Of course, I'm being disingenuous, since we can guess where the green came from. It didn't emerge from the character or the story, it was tacked on to sell more product, since this is EDH after all, where wizards could print a WUBRG 1/1 with "on ETB, you lose the game" and the only reason it wouldn't see play is because wizards already printed even better ways to achieve WUBRG. Not that every card needs to be designed with a "story first" or "theme first" approach, and it is fair to change a character's colors or give them access to additional colors, like Ajani gaining red. That made perfect sense in the story, and it was a really big thing when it first happened. It got actual literary treatment, and the new color was reflected not only in Ajani's card art and mechanics but also in his personality in the story. But this one feels pretty hamfisted, like maybe this card was going to be 3UB but green was tacked on to sell more precons. I especially get that impression because there's no green *anywhere* in the card art, which is so odd. There are other cases like that, particularly in older cards, alternate arts, cards with more than 4 colors, etc. But in this case, it feels like if the card had been 2UBG at the time they sent it to the artist, green would have been used instead of red in the art.

why would wave of reckoning need arcades to remain on board? it isn't arcades itself that makes that card especially good in an arcades deck, it's the fact that you're already playing a bunch of 0-power creatures because _they_ synergize with arcades, and then you find yourself saying "well would you look at that, I have a bunch of 0-power creatures, that makes wave of reckoning a one-sided wrath." it's still one-sided even if your arcades was removed

I'd say that my deck is an interesting one, where it's game plan is big guy hit hard, somehow mixed with control. The idea is this, I control the game until I can reach the point where my commander, Melek, Reforged Researcher, can be used to win the game. This is generally either by making Melek unblockable, giving him trample, or simply buring everyone for a ton with Chandra's ignition. Also, to clarify what Melek does, his power and toughness is equal to 2 times the number of instants and sorceries in the graveyard. He also makes my first insant or sorcery each turn 3 mana cheaper. Ideally I'll use a ton of draw power and mill to get a ton of cards into the graveyard to make Melek huge, then use one of two cards to give my instants and sorceries flashback in the graveyard. It's fun, but it can be hit or miss. Most of the time my only creature is Melek, in which he can discourage swinging in to me because attacking into the 20/20 creature isn't ideal, but he can still only block one thing at a time, not to mention any flying creatures can easily get past him. Another issue surrounding him is that he has no protection, meaning that the deck relies on either drawing swiftfoot boots, or keeping it's many counterspells active. The other thing is that the deck probably should have more targeted removal. Having that would be very useful for keeping myself alive. Also, while omniscience is cool, making spells fro, your hand free is very irrelevant in the deck that does a lot of mana cheating, so I'm likely going to remove that. Legitimately, the most useful omniscience has been was when it got milled by Orthanc and burned my opponent for 10. It's the sort of thing where if it comes up then it's cool, but in most situations I'll either never reach the point where I can use it, or using it wouldn't actually be all that helpful.

I have a Temur deck that's ostensibly Group Hug, and it makes people play fair by hating on degenerate win cons. I play Guided Passage so people can see exactly what's in my deck, and I often play with my hand visible. The thing is... The deck also runs stuff like Obliterate and Apocalypse and other such devastating spells. If people try to threaten me, I will nuke everything. However, my deck also is a clock. Because, yes I'm helping everyone with free cards and cool abilities, but I'm helping myself _more_ and it's clear that if I'm left alone for too long, I'll win. So, games often become a fun tension between my opponents taking advantage of what I give them t in order to win, and taking too long and having _me_ win.😂 I call the deck "Death by Snoo-Snoo"-it group hugs everyone until it crushes them to death :D

I've had something similar happen with my Budget-CEDH Deck. The Core Combo is Rocco, Cabaretti Caterer and Wirewood symbiote. While some people see wirewood as a threat for its ability to bounce my commander to hand, most are just confused by the choice. I'll even leave Rocco on the board to bait away destruction spells from Wirewood, which Wirewood acts as a protection for Rocco anyway. When I start building my board state, most people ignore me since I usually use Rocco to search for mana dorks. To them I'm ramping for a larger creature. Not realizing the combo the mana dorks can pull off. By the time they realize that I've been building an "Exodia" to kill the table it's usually too late. Rocco can search for most solutions including graveyard and exile recovery. I even have alternate ways to assemble "Exodia" to confuse people I play against. (To them) Suddenly, I'm not playing my game winning Combo? (To Me) They both do the same thing, but this one does it in a different route. Deception does wonders. Mana dorks are dangerous.

I've often said to many of my friends that when building a commander deck-- you build with the commander in mind but not as the _Sole_ focus. That way the deck itself can function without to much assistance from the commander. I have a Zaxara Deck, but I don't run Infinite mana, I just make a shit ton of tokens, and hydras and cast exponentially bigger spells. Sure, you or I might know if there's an infinite combo but that is more of the exception, than the rule. Taking my Stax Deck for exmaple; I designed to function without a commander but the one I do have just so happens to be a good Stax piece. So regardless of how the deck is played, the commander is just one piece of the puzzle that while does help is not necessary to win or stagnate the game.

To kinda expand more on the Miiryam deck--as well as tribal as a whole--is my Tiamat Deck. When I've had my friends play the deck, I've often told them "The goal is not to win with the Dragon cards in the deck or hand,--its to win with what you reveal with Tiamat." The Core concept of my dragon tribal deck is to get Ramp and get Tiamat out with a very specific mana base, then usually by the time you get her out, you can usually cast every dragon that you revealed and pretty much every other dragon card in the deck. And with other enablers like Mirram, and Thrakkus the Butcher, make your board presence very hard to deal with, while the Mana Rock Dragon orbs make it so that your dragons are cheaper or come in with bonuses like card draw, haste or +1/+1 counters. To this day, I've never once seen someone at my games _ever_ get salty over my "Tiamat Rising" deck, because its designed to be fun for everyone at the table. You're not losing because its an optimized EDH rec beast that wins on turn 4 or sooner. Your losing because there's a bunch of big fuck-off dragons that are just smacking you down for 540+ damage. Sure its optimized--but in a way where the deck is like a puzzle, and once you have all the pieces do you see where the fun can be had. Plus--if I may toot my own horn--the funny thing about the deck is not _One single card_ in that deck was ever bought as a single, including Tiamat herself which funnily enough was the _First_ ever magic card I unpacked--everything from miiryam, the Thrakkus, to the Ur-dragon, was a dragon I unpacked. Simply put--with any deck--the identity you want and colors matter for make your deck and tribe distinct. Are you swinging wide with a million tokens to nickel and dime your opponent? Or do you only have a small group of them that absolutely _Pummel_ your opponent? Or do you want some funky shit to happen?

As a WUBRG player, its very simple(with the help of proxying).. For lands: Duals, Shocks, Fetches, Urza's Saga, Command Tower, and Gaea's Cradle, no basics. For artifacts: Sol ring, Arcane Signet, Mana Crypt, Mox Opal, Mox Amber, Mox Diamond, Chromatic Lantern, Commander's sphere, Grim Monolith, Mana Vault, and a few others. For Creatures: Birds or paradise, Bloom Tender, Jegantha, Delighted Halfling, Faeburrow Elder, Noble & Ignoble Hierarch, and most importantly Dockside Extortionist.. Some rules I follow when it comes to deckbuilding: The more colors in a given deck, the less basic lands I need to run The sweet spot for a mana curve should be in the 3-5 range, any more than that your deck is more likely to be slower Have high synergy with several win conditions, every card should have a purpose and if it doesn't do much by itself then it can be considered a weak link, things like counterspells and board wipes might not always be the answer. Most important rule is having fun, unless stax is your idea of fun

Yeah, you lost me when you said essentially that you were 'okay with folks using their commander as a combo piece, but not if it's only a secondary combo piece'. Decks having options is a good thing. Let people play how they want. I'd get it if you were just generally against Commanders as combo pieces, because it speeds up the game and when you always essentially have a combo piece in hand, that makes 2 card combos into basically one card fishing expeditions. But nope, you're okay with that, just not if the deck also does other things. I mean... why?

Personally, I just ask. I play both cEDH and EDH - something that's bailed me out a lot of the time in these kinds of situations is talking less on power level, more on addressing problem cards the deck could have that would make me recalculate. I ask about fast mana, fast wins, etc, and then based on commander I'll ask their particular problem cards. If someone is playing Tivit, I ask if they run Time Sieve. If someone is playing Garth, I ask if they run Displacer Kitten. If someone is playing Abdel Adrian, I ask if they run Animate Dead. If someone plays Malcolm and has red, I ask if they run glint-horn buccaneer... etc Otherwise, if I'm unaware on the commander, I'll ask "is your commander a combo piece"? While I agree that in general, having a back-pocket stronger combo in an otherwise fun and thematic deck removes a lot of the cool factor from it... some people just love combos and feel that makes the deck more interesting. The question above tells me my priorities before the game - and if they're the kind of person to intentionally lie before the game just for a singular surprise win they're just not worth my time anyway. Awareness and effective communication nix problems with threat assessment off the rip.

I've had to explain this to my friends who ask why I'm not running Reliquary Tower effects in certain decks. For example for Curie and Beluna decks both have multiple of these effects. Tower, Though Vessel, Decanter of Endless Water, and Library of Leng (Curie)/Tishana(Beluna). Both are blue decks with a Commander that generates card advantage, want to draw into and hold up counterspells/removal, and overall the power of the induvidual cards in the decks are pretty weak unless gathered into a critical mass. (Curie wants to play lots of artifacts to make powerful Master of Etherium type creatures, and Beluna wants to survive until it can play Virtue of Strength and "Storm off" with something like Iraxxa or Flaming Tyrannosaurus.) On the other hand, my two other main decks are Kagha Self Mill, and Bladewing Dragon Reanimator. Not being able to discard to hand size actively locks me out of situations where I can use card draw as a discard outlet. Sculpting my hand, discarding creatures, and keeping reanimation and interaction in hand.

I'd like to share an anecdote from my own deckbuilding experience with Tawnos the Toymaker. He reads that, if I cast a Beast or Bird, I make an artifact copy of that beast or bird. I went in, originally thinking I could just get away with running good beasts and birds, but this rapidly spiraled into a realization that a lot of Mutate cards happen to be beasts, and I'm not copying it entering, I'm copying the *cast*. With this new information, it quickly spiraled into a jammy combo deck centered around bringing out Auspicious Starrix ASAP and mutating it onto another Mutate pile and get triggers that have me reveal and slam onto the battlefield 5, 6, 7, and 8 permanents of the top of my deck doubly so since Mutate copies mutate onto the same creature declared for mutation, resulting in eventually flipping Craterhoof/Ulvenwald Oddity/Concordant Crossroads/Any haste-giver and swinging out with hundreds of thousands of points of damage, which typically all trample and can't be blocked by more than one creature thanks to Battlefront Krushok and the myriad ways of getting counters on my guys. This is a really good video. I want to add that there's also the balancing act between having a set gameplan and getting to play different and interesting combinations in every match. A deck having more facets to its identity is great, but it can also be made too specific, planned out and rigid. That's the consistency trap; it's effective but it runs counter to the randomized nature of the game.

Also as a result of the Win cons being combos it further plays into one of edhs biggest design flaws. You are encouraged to do nothing because the first person to thassa might get it countered meaning the second or third thassa might be less contested. Not necessarily a problem but definitely not for everyone.

Choose a cute monster (usually female) with those colors as my commander The job of my commander is to sit there and look pretty, dangit. 😂 Once I stopped caring about what my commanders actually _do,_ it gave me so much more freedom to explore my ideas

my favorite deck is a sliver deck where i burned 6 players all in one turn with infinite burn damage. My friends all focus me at the table now

This just sounds like a hot take towards a very and I mean VERY small corner of the game.

The moral of the story here really seems to be "Don't play infinite combo bullshit with your friends or you will never get to play the game." and that's a very good moral.
